Add Web Map Service (WMS) Layers

The Web Map Service Interface Standard (WMS) provides a simple HTTP interface for requesting geo-registered map images from one or more distributed geospatial databases. A WMS request defines the geographic layer(s) and area of interest to be processed. The response to the request is one or more geo-registered map images (returned as JPEG, PNG, etc) that can be displayed in the GIS interface.
It is possible to connect to a WMS server, either private or public. Aarhus Workbench includes one public free server but the user can add and save other server links.

  • Enter WMS Link - Insert the link for the WMS server.

  • Enter WMS layer name - Type the name for the WMS server.

  • Favorites - Lists the saved WMS servers. To add a server to the GIS interface, click the check box and press OK.

  • Delete - Delete selected saved server.

  • Edit - Edit selected Web service to change its name.

Save maps offline

  1. Zoom to the wanted zoom level on the GIS interface

  2. Go to workspace tab and press “Save as image”. A window will open and the image from the GIS interface can be saved as a .tif file which is geocoded. Remember if data or profiles are displayed on the GIS interface, they will be saved with the image too.

  3. Add the image to the GIS layer control by clicking the “open folder” button at the lower right corner.
